Extractives Certificates of Competence
The Health and Safety at Work (Mining Operations and Quarrying Operations) Regulations (2016) require everyone who holds a safety critical role to have a current certificate of competence competence (CoC).
The New Zealand Mining Board of Examiners (the Board) issues, renews, cancels and suspends CoCs. It will not issue a CoC unless it is satisfied that the person is able to perform their duties and maintain health and safety in their areas of responsibility.
The CoC must be renewed every five years, based on completing and meeting continuing professional development (CPD) requirements.
CoC holders have statutory responsibilities which reflect the importance of their roles. Holding a CoC shows that the holder has relevant knowledge, experience, skills to carry out their duties safely.
CoC requirements are set by Worksafe and are specified in a New Zealand Gazette notice by WorkSafe. https://gazette.govt.nz/notice/id/2014-au7793
